Women Making Waves March Video 2012

Video of “Turning the Tide: Making Waves for Women’s Rights” march – July 2012 – to mark World Development Information Day: 24 October 2012

Today Salamander Trust marks World Development Information Day by bringing you “Women Making Waves“: a video short of this last July’s March for women’s rights, which formed one arm of the International AIDS Conference march in Washington DC.

The 24th of October was chosen by the United Nations to recognize the importance of international communications for global development – for its potential to mobilise public opinion and create a greater awareness of the problems of development around the world. Modern technologies have made it possible to share knowledge in a fast, easy and democratic way. We are finding new and better ways to communicate with each other and to share information, experiences and expertise.

This summer a mass March was organised to coincide with the International AIDS Conference that took place in Washington, D.C. The March gave thousands of demonstrators an opportunity to express themselves and their demands for justice and an effective response to HIV and AIDS.

Many of us marched for the need to respect women’s right in the HIV and AIDS response. We asked some of the marchers why they were there to support women’s rights. We recorded their responses to share with the many others around the world who were there in spirit also, who were unable to be there in person – either because of US immigration restrictions or because of lack of funds. Please feel free to share their messages of solidarity and support with your own networks.
